ChoicePoint's Position on REAL ID

March 27, 2007

The goals of making individual identity documents more secure and tamper resistant are good ones, yet the Real ID Act creates more issues than it solves in the view of many of our customers and consumers.

In fact, the current system of using multiple sources of identity information is clearly preferred by our customers and many consumer advocates.

States should, therefore, continue to have the flexibility they need to create and secure identity documents as they see fit without the unintended consequences of reducing privacy protections.

Consumer advocates are also concerned that retail merchants and other businesses that require an ID to complete a transaction will, in the future, collect and sell identity information to third parties.

With regard to that issue, ChoicePoint does not buy or sell information captured by point-of-purchase scanners from retail merchants or other businesses, nor do we intend to.
